New Years Resolutions

OK, so it's 2012, a new year, and you know what that means, New Years Resolutions!!!

So what are your resolutions for the new year?

oh, wait, I don't care.

New Years Resolutions are fucking stupid and for lazy procrastinators. Of course no one is perfect and we all could use a little self-improvement, myself included, but waiting for a certain time of year to do it is just an excuse for putting off something that you should be doing when you notice the "problem".

For example, what are the usual New Years Resolutions?

1. Quit Smoking
2. Lose weight/get healthier/exercise more, etc. etc.

ok, so say its sometime around September, and your smoking a sweet cigarette, and you notice a nasty cough start to develop, you notice your getting winded much easier, etc. So you think to yourself "man, I should quit these things, they make me feel like shit. I know, I'll keep smoking for another couple months and stop for my New Years Resolution!"

Good idea man, keep on puffin' on those things for another couple of months, im sure it will be fine.

Wrong. The longer you do it, the harder its going to be to quit, so you probably should've done it back in September dont you think? Why wait until some "random" time of year to do it, only making it a harder thing to do once that time comes?

Sorry about the rant, its just something that bugs me this time of year.

I am very pleased to announce the release of my good friend Clint Heidorn's debut full length LP titled "Atwater".

These are quite beautiful compositions made from acoustic guitars, cellos, violins, field recordings, sporadic percussion, and a variety of other devices to create an old vintage "antiquarian" feel. Like finding an old book in the corner of your dirty, cobwebbed attic that is filled with stories of depression and sadness, yet hope and beauty, that only falls apart and turns to dust the more pages in you turn.

I am bad with comparisons, but maybe it is reminiscent of some of the newer sounds of Earth or maybe the quieter parts of Godspeed you Black Emperor!

This release is more of a passionate art-object than some half-assed, sloppily put together album some people seem to be churning out on a conveyor belt lately. I can definitely see this album put up on shelves or walls on display to the world, rather than stuffed haphazardly inside your run of the mill record storage receptacle. Hopefully you will fall into the first group and be one of the lucky few to own one the mere 148 copies produced of this masterwork.

Hand-stained, hand-numbered, and hand-silkscreened, including hand-affixed bones of local trees. Includes a photograph and album credit insert printed on 80# linen card stock, and a download code.

Oh, by the way, I had the extreme pleasure of drawing the "Atwater" logo for this release. So thanks again Clint for making me a part of this work of art, no matter how small of a contribution it was.

Burning At The Stake

BATS are a local (Ventura Co.) Technical Extreme (I don't really like that term, but I don't really know how else to describe them) Metal act who got in touch with me awhile back about performing some Noise Electronics on their upcoming album "Nefarious Campaign". As some more observant readers may notice I am always down to lend a sonic blast or two on metal albums, so I couldn't pass up the chance.

Anyways, the album is just about out, and they are having their record release party at Hollywood's Whiskey-A-Go-Go on August 18th opening for The Faceless. Check the flyer.

You can order cheap presale tickets from the band themselves over at their facebook page here, and of course while your there check em out and have a listen, they are pretty sick!

What's pretty awesome as well is, that their drummer Reiley rigged up some sort of MIDI trigger pads (or something?), so they can actually play the samples of my noise live during thier respective moments. Sick, I can't wait to hear them do that live.

So if you also happen to be there, and see me wnadering around, probably around the back being a wallflower like I usually am at shows, heh, come say "what's up".

I think I may have seen A UFO

OK, well technically I did see a UFO. In the literal sense of the word. I did see an Unidentified Flying Object. I saw something in the air and I didn't know what it was. I'm not saying "It was totally aliens!!".

Now, I would also like to state that I have an immense interest in Aliens, UFOs and the like, and it has always been a dream of mine to actually see something along these lines. But with that in mind, I am not one to call "UFO!" on everything that I see in the sky, I will definitely call bullshit on something when I see it.

Allright with the disclaimers out of the way, I'll get on with it. Oh, sorry, no pics. Bummer, right? But there is no way my camera would have gotten this.

Well, I was in my backyard on Saturday. I don't remember exactly what time it was, but it was in the late afternoon, early evening. The sun was setting but it wasn't dark yet and the sky was still blue. I'm going with the 6 - 7pm range. Just kind of looking around for whatever reason, I point my head straight up, and I see what looks like a star. I think "Wow, that star is out early, but it is close to getting dark so maybe its one of the brighter ones".

But upon further looking, I notice that it's a metallic object, and the light coming off of it looks like that because the sun in it's setting position is hitting it and reflecting off of it. So of course then I naturally think "Oh OK, just a really high airplane". But I keep looking at it and it isn't moving, just staying in the same straight up position. So I think that's odd, so I keep looking at it and then I notice that its getting brighter. not only that, it is dimming again after that, like a pulsing. Not in a straight on/off sort of way, but a slow fade from dim to bright and back again. Over and over.

This may sound like some plane's signal lights, that's what I thought at first too, but it was much too bright, and it was still way too light outside to see those anyways. And again, planes move, heh.

So I stood there watching this object for maybe 10-15 mins, It didn't do shit the entire time. Just sat there, pulsing. So after that amount of time, my neck was sore from looking straight up so I went inside.

Now that's the part of the story that a buddy of mine, who I happen to discuss all things UFOs/Aliens/whatever weirdness comes up with, started yelling at me.

"What the fuck, you see a UFO and you walk away?!?! Your neck was sore? Just lay down stupid!"

Now in retrospect, he was right, I totally shouldn't have walked away, maybe if I watched longer I could have maybe gotten a clearer shot of this object and explained it. Or seen how it departed, like shot off at crazy speeds, or floated away, or vanished, or whatever crazy way UFOs leave, because it wasn't there about an hour later when I went back out again.

OK, so any ideas?

Swamp Gas?

Oh, and I thought about maybe it was the Space Station too, because at certain times it is visible from Earth, and it does end up having a bright "star-like" quality when the sun reflects off of it. But again, it moves. Slowly, but it moves. And it doesn't pulse light either, heh.

This may have not been the "Dream UFO Sighting" I was hoping for, but its something and it was neat. So I'll take it.

Here is some nice new sounds for you analog lovers out there.

First up is the debut vinyl release of BACTERIA CULT!! And I couldn't think of a better way to debut it than with a split w/ our fellow LA Noise brothers in ACTUARY.

Our side is a bizarre journey into audio collage strangeness, and Actuary's side is surprisingly laid back, yet very dense. Pressed on to clear blue wax, with extremely psychedelic artwork by Kevin Fetus to top it off.

This beast is out on Kevin's Vomitcore Music label, but you can grab one from me at The Sentient Recordings page.

Next up is an epic 4-way Harsh Noise split with Skin Graft, Boar, A Snake In The Garden, and CIRCUIT WOUND. This is a great release that I am proud to be a part of. The other artists involved did an exceptional job, and there is a great variety of the Harsh Noise genre represented here. Full color double sided artwork on pro-duped tapes.

This was released by the fine folks at Phage Tapes, so go grab one from there. I have a few copies available, but are quickly being nabbed up through trades, so better to play it safe and get it through Phage. They deserve the support.

RIP Seth Putnam

Totally bummed, AxCx were one of my earlier Grindcore experiences when I was A wee Junior High lad. Morbid Florist, Top 40 Hits, Everyone Should Be Killed, and 40 More Reasons to Hate Us were in heavy rotation back in the day. My friends and I always eagerly awaited a new Anal Cunt album, if only just to see where they would take their hilarious brand of over the top anti-PC offensiveness.

here is what Blabbermouth.net had to say about it.

ANAL CUNT's publicist, Kim Kelly of Catharsis PR, has confirmed via Twitter that the band's frontman, Seth Putnam, died earlier today (Saturday, June 11) of a suspected heart attack. He was 43 years old.

Commented Kelly: "Yes, it's true. Seth Putnam, one of the most infamous musicians that extreme metal has ever seen, the grindcore GG Allin, has passed away due to a heart attack.

"I handled all the promotion for ANAL CUNT's last album, 'Fuckin' A', and Seth was always happy to oblige any request I sent his way. The band had been working on a new album before his passing, so chances are his musical career's epitaph has yet to be inscribed.

"I want to remind everyone that no matter how outrageous and controversial his musical career has been, Seth was still a human being with friends and family that loved him. I'm hoping that the Internet will remember that. This is a very sad and trying time for those that knew him, and the last thing they need to see is an outpouring of message board hate. The man lived and died by his own rules; if anything, respect him for that."

Putnam was known for his brutal screaming and lyrics that either shock, offend, or invoke morbid humor. Throughout his career, Putnam was involved in many side projects, including providing backing vocals on PANTERA's "The Great Southern Trendkill" album.

Putnam was born on May 15, 1968, in or around Boston, Massachusetts to father Edward R. Putnam and mother Barbara Ann Donohue. Both he and his parents are divorced.

In the mid-1980s, Putnam played bass in the thrash metal band EXECUTIONER.

On October 12, 2004, Putnam was hospitalized after ingesting two months' worth of Ambien sleeping pills. It was reported that he spent the previous day contemplating suicide, although exact circumstances surrounding the drug overdose are vague.

Putnam's reaction to the irony of his having been in a coma after previously writing the song "You're In A Coma" was published in the Boston Phoenix. "Actually, it turned out it was just as gay as the song I wrote nine years ago — being in a coma was just as fuckin' stupid as I wrote it was," he was quoted as saying.

Black Sheep Noise

Hey look, I've actually been up to something for a change.

My buddies band BLACK SHEEP WALL recently have been recording their new album (which will be coming out soon on fucking SEASON OF MIST?!?!? YES!) and they graciously asked me to perform some Noise on it! Stoked, always glad to help bring some more noise to the metal world.

We did the recording session here at APOSEMATIC SOUND the other day, and it went great! I am not going to give away what I did sonically for the album, you'll have to buy it to check it out, but I will say that they invited me to appear on 3 songs, plus generously gave me my own track to work on as well.

Brandon (bass), documented the whole thing with some pictures and video, and recently posted them on the Black Sheep Wall Facebook page (link above). So I figured, what the hell, I'll post 'em here too.

Ever hear the term "Bedroom Noise"? Yeah well, I guess this is where it comes from. Literally sitting on my bed making noise. Yeah, I was too lazy to breakdown the Wire Werewolves Synth/Sampler/Drum Machine setup (not enough room for both), so I said "fuck it, I'll just setup my gear and play on my bed like a lazy piece of shit"

Here is the back of my head while doing some mixing. Exciting no? You are super jealous of my super awesome original XTRO poster though.

Then the fucker snapped a secret shot of my gear! Nah, just kidding, I'm not all secretive about my gear/setup. I don't think there's really anything up there that is terribly exciting anyways.

Unfortunately for this next part, I had my mixer levels too high when I was recording, and it came out clipped and overloaded. Whoops. So this material you hear here did not make the cut. In other words, these videos are the only decent sounding recordings of these jams. Unless I can successfully jack the Audio off of this video while it is still on Brandon's phone. I'm pretty sure I can get that to work, but will it sound as good? We'll see.

Doing some minimizing around here. Everything here works great, it's just that I don't really use this stuff and it takes up space. Oh, sorry this is for locals "pickup only", there is no way I am gonna ship this stuff. SO I thought I would offer this stuff up to you guys here first before doing the craigslist thing, which I really don't wanna do.

Flextone 2112 2x12 guitar cabinet - Sounds great for highs, does not come with grill, I threw it out a few years back because I thought it looked better this way. But I guess you can probably find a new one for pretty cheap if you really need too. Has rubber bat glued to it, which I will probably remove, heh. $100

Charvel Fusion one of my first guitars, got this when I was 12? Has some minor paint dings and scratches. Mainly from the '94 quake when the guitar fell over and then everything on my shelves fell on top of it. Comes with case!! Sounds great for clean tones, but doesn't really have the metal "crunch" that my personal tastes demand. $300

First, we would like to announce that we have upgraded to a trio. We have recently added a second guitarist, Jeremy Skinner, to the group. His addition will undoubtedly make things even heavier and we should be out playing shows by sometime this summer.

Also, we have decided that we are going to release the raw unmixed version of our full length "From Beyond What Shadows Bring" on a VERY limited cassette. These are the "lost" Oakland recordings done in 2009, the final version is nearing completion and will give news of its release when we have it. Will give the whole story on why this recording was "lost" later.

And finally, the split/collaboration album with Luasa Raelon is complete and just waiting on funding to release it, so look for that creeper in the near future.

Disastrous Murmur

Well shit, if it isn't that time again. It's been MUCH too long since I dispensed some Death Metal filth in the airwaves around here. Yep, that's right, time for another installment of JL AMERICA weirdo Death Metal downloads!

Speaking of which, I have noticed that I have been slacking in keeping up with these. So I am going to make a point of posting these more often. Especially considering that we are almost at the end of this particular download "theme (showcasing the outsider Death Metal label JL AMERICA)", and I have 2 more download "themes" ready to go, I better get this fucking show on the road here right?

OK, so here we have Austria's Disastrous Murmur. In addition to having one of my favorite band names ever, play some pretty sick and kick ass Death Metal. Raw, but doesn't sound like shit. Musical chops too, but aren't techy show-offs. Killer. Plus, with titles like "Disgorged Bowelmovement", "Extra Uterine Pregnancy Part 2", and "Satisfaction in the Morgue", you should pretty much know what your getting into.

With all that said and done, here we have Disastrous Murmur's fantastic debut album from 1992 "Rhapsodies in Red".

RIP Daniel Kraus

2 years ago today my best friend Daniel passed away. Now, I am not very good with words concerning these types of situations to be honest, but needless to say I was privileged to know him.

Also, I was honored to have released his band, Admiral Angry's debut full length CD on my Sentient Recordings label (which is gone from me, but is now available here via shels music). I was even more honored that he asked me be a guest on the album, making noise and such on a few of the tracks.

So I finally started a youtube account and uploaded this classic live performance.

This was the final night of a week-long West Coast tour with Moth Drakula and Obstacle Corpse.*

We just drove 12 hours from Portland, OR, the last 6 were in pouring rain, and the last 2 were stuck in traffic and the last half hour we were lost! But we made it, and to vent our frustrations, things like this happened:

Screaming girl = Shannon Walter from 16 Bitch Pileup, who played earlier that night.

Shit talking "Fucking 3 minute LA shit" = Ryan from Sixes. So funny hearing that. But for the previously mentioned reasons, none of us played for very long that night.

the "3 minute LA shit" he is referring to is, back in the glory days of the LA Harsh Noise scene (which is now nonexistent), tons of artists and groups mainly in the LA area that played short, blasting, violent, sets that well, lasted only a few minutes. No complaints from me though, That's just as long as they needed to be. And man, I miss seeing a good pit to a noise show. Too bad most of those mosh kids were "just a phase"-ers and now long gone. ugh.

I Love Super Bowl Sunday

But I can honestly care less about who is playing, or football in general that is. What I love about it is that today is like some crazy national holiday here and the town virtually disappears. Seriously, when this game is on, my city becomes a ghost town, it's amazing!

So I usually take advantage of the lack of people about town and run some errands that are usually plagued with standing in long lines, drivers not going when the freaking light turns green, and other general "there's too many fucking people and your all in my fucking way" type of complaints.

I still need to figure out a nice restaurant to go eat out at tonight as well. Your standard 45 min waits can go fuck yourselves today, I'll get that seat right away thank you, The Big Game is on!!

Back to said "Big Game", have you noticed within the last few years that people are discussing the commercials that play during the super bowl more than the game? People don't even know who is even playing the game, but they couldn't be more stoked to check out the new Pepsi commercial starring what's his name that won't be famous in another year. Do you realize how stupid that is? OK, not to get too "crust punk" on you, but I feel this needs explaining to the people who get hyped about the commercials during the Super Bowl.

OK, commercials are put right the in middle of shows that you watch, so that corporations that already have too much money can try to sell you whatever garbage that they think you need (P.S. you don't). That's right, they interrupt YOUR entertainment every few minutes to try and force some crap product down your throat and you people are stoked on that!! They have you eating out of their fucking hands!! It's almost funny how ridiculous that is.

Can you imagine that say you went out and bought some CD and after a song or two an announcer came on and said "We'll get back to these sweet riffs in a moment, but have you heard about the new fantastic products from Tide? It will remove all kinds of stains....." I don't know about you, but I would be out in the streets setting cars on fire and throwing newspaper stands through storefront windows if I ever heard that.

OK, now I am starting to sound like a communist. I should just go back to being a good American and say things like "Go obligatory sports team! I hope you win this game that doesn't matter because there is another one being played in just a year from now! But that doesn't matter because this is the single greatest event of my life!!"

Sounds about right.

Dream Analysis

So, normally I don't share these types of things, and dream journals are pretty freakin' lame but I had a wild one last night. It's so out there I couldn't NOT share it with you!

Quick warning, some of this can get kind of graphic. So if that offends, avert your tender gaze!!!

With that out of the way, the dream started like this:

I walk into my bedroom and there stands my ex-girlfriend, which is not unusual as although we have been broken up for quite some time, we are still good friends, but this time she has re-arranged my entire room. There is a couch to one wall and huge entertainment center at the other and big lamps in each corner and what not. Almost like a small hotel room, I guess? Real boring and stale looking.

I ask, "this is odd, why did you do this?"

She replies "Oh, so we can have sex!"

I of course go "Oh OK!" and don't question anything about the furniture re-arrangements.

She says "OK, one thing real quick, I'll be right back." and I turn my head to watch her leave the room.

As I turn back and look into my room, everything is back to normal and there on my bed, standing up on her knees, nude, is Amy Sedaris.

If you don't know who she is, she is a comedian who used to star in that show on Comedy Central called Strangers With Candy. Her character on the show looked like this:

Ouch right? But fortunately in real life she looks like this:

Better, but still, I never really found her particularly attractive, very funny, kinda cute I guess, but never really saw her in a sexual way. Sorry Amy.

OK, back to the dream. So there she was, nude and all, her hair was shorter though. But stranger still was that she was small. Not like a short person small, like maybe somewhere in the 3 to 4 foot range. Tiny.

But I guess that didn't phase me and immediately I get on top of her in the missionary position and we start fucking.

Well, sort of. As I was putting my dick inside her, it was very tight (due to her smallness I'm guessing, heh) and she complained that it was hurting. Being the Mr. Sensitive that I am I say, "It's OK, you'll get used to it." and began fucking her.

So after a couple thrusts I look down and I am actually fucking a lizard from behind. An actual lizard like you'd see when hiking, but very large, human size, and the scales were tinted blue for some reason.

And for some even odder reason, I still was fucking, I guess I couldn't stop the momentum even though there was a big blue lizard down there. But with every one of my thrusts, out It's mouth came gross blue vomit. It was pretty disgusting. So disgusting I guess because that is what woke me up.

Confused of course, but I was awake. Don't really know what to make of that one. Felt like I was in Naked Lunch or something. Did I inadvertently wander into Interzone sometime?

I thought about trying to find an artist or graphic designer to help visualize these things, but its probably for the best that I didn't.

Now here is a really weird part. After I was able to wake up a little more and regain some composure, I turn on my TV and flip by Comedy Central, where they are playing the Stranger's With Candy movie, staring one Amy Sedaris.

Spooky.

Dead Voices on Air w/ cEvin Key + more

Caught wind of this awesome gig on short notice but was fortunate enough to wrangle up a solid crew to attend with me. Fellow Bacteria Cultist Eddie N. and the awesome Candice as well.

cEvin Key's work with Skinny Puppy and Download have been HUGE influences on me and Dead Voices On Air are some of my longtime favs as well. I haven't seen em play since '99!!

This was going on at some place called Zanzibar in Santa Monica. Killer venue, KILLER sound system.

First up was Surachai, who played a kind hard industrial/techno with screaming distorted vocals and with sampled metal riffs seeping in for good measure. Bonus points for rocking an insane modular system to create his racket.

Next up was Wet Mango (I think?) who made some killer chopped up gabber/IDM type stuff using Gameboys? Yeah, sounds lame, but it was actually pretty rad.

Then cEvin took the reigns and started blasting high BPM Japanese style dance music. It was part DJing part live performance. It was pretty rad for awhile, but it kept going and going and going. I think his set went on for close to 2 hours.

I couldn't hang after awhile and Candice and myself went outside for a little walk. But upon returning, cEvin was closing out his set, and Mr. Mark Spybey (DVOA) joined him for a bit before seamlessly flowing straight into a short DOWNLOAD set!!! Yes!! I immediately woke right the fuck up to hearing these classics. Set list included (and I could be wrong here because I suck at remembering some of their titles) "Suni C", "Sidewinder", and "A Turin Cloud".

From here Mr. Key bowed out and began the Spybey vs. Gnome set. Things mellowed out nicely to some quieter and stranger atmospheres.

From this point on, Mr. Gnome stepped out and was quickly replaced by some other dude. From which they began playing some standard DVOA tunes. it was killer, even heard my one of my favorite songs, "Geong G'uma".

Totally solid night, and video to prove it! Enjoy!

GREAT show, I got to meet cEvin for the THIRD time, and Mr. Spybey for the first! totally nice dudes. I mentioned to Spybey that he "needs to play more often as the last time I saw you was in 99!", he goes "Oh yes, at The Smell!" and he remembered it well. Awesome.

This was hopefully a good precursor for more great shows for the forthcoming year.

Hey look! Finally! Months ago, when I put this album out, I sent out a shitload of promo copies to various magazines and whatnot for review, and look, one of em finally printed a review! And here I was, getting ready to talk all kinds of shit about "fucking mainstream metal rags, don't give the new guys a chance, fuck them!" I guess I just gotta be patient with this stuff. So hopefully there will be more reviews to follow.

Oh, and I'll forgive them for the dumb Snakes on a plane reference, and typoeing my label name. Bitches.

WIRE WEREWOLVES

"Coil of the Pale Mist", split & collaboration with one of our favorite artists, LUASA RAELON. Dark ambient meets dark metal. Recording is complete, just saving up the cash to get this bitch to press.

"From Beyond What Shadows Bring", the seemingly cursed debut full length. 4 years of work and writing so far. The re-recording (yes, "re" as in second time around) is near complete and getting this thing out this year is priority numero uno. Features guest noisers HIVE MIND (in his second collab with us) and THE RITA. Also, featuring jaw dropping artwork from my best freind, the late great Daniel Kraus. If any of you have been to our myspace page you have seen this monstrosity. I'll tell the complete crazy story behind this album when it is finally DONE.

We also have some live recordings, including our infamous "noise" set from the SNAKES ALIVE record release party, that we would like to see the light of day as well.

BACTERIA CULT

"split 7inch w/ ACTUARY". Our first vinyl appearance will be a split release with one of our favorite noisters, LA's ACTUARY. If you haven't heard them, they are a 3 piece harsh psychedelic noise group. Good shit and a great pairing in my opinion. Blue wax! All recordings are done and is going to press soon!! Mr. Dodge will be working on a special painting for this release, and if it looks half as good as our concept ideas it will be the greatest thing ever.

"3-way split CD w/ BLUE SABBATH BLACK CHEER & JUHYO". Stoked for this one, BSBC are AMAZING and fucking scary, and JUHYO rule too so this should be one fucking weird release. I believe all the recordings are done so this should go to press soon too!

other than that, we have a shitload of unused recordings, so hopefully we can crank out another full length this year too.

CIRCUIT WOUND

"4 way split 2xcs" Phage Tapes, a killer noise label I have worked with in the past is going to put out a 4 way split between myself and A SNAKE IN THE GARDEN, SKIN GRAFT, and BOAR. All harsh noise! Should be sick!

"Brains on Backwash Vol. III" compilation. This will make my 4th or 5th appearance now on 905 Tapes? These compilations are pretty killer, all are on long 90 minute tapes and feature a plethora of experimental and noise artists. The clincher though is that there is no track spacing! As in no silence in between tracks or anything. Who starts and ends where? Who am I listening to right now? Who cares! 90 minutes of unstoppable mind melt.

Other than those, no other plans for CW as of yet. Although I have 2 full lengths done, one made for CD, and one specifically made for vinyl. Som of who's recordings even date back to the old 2006 Glendale studios. Maybe they will actually come out? In addition to those I wouldn't mind a few of my older, more limited releases, getting the reissue treatment.

SOLO WORK

I've mentioned briefly that I was going to start a "solo" project, as in play under my own name, Jay Howard, as opposed to CW or another band name. Well, I have a ton of recordings done and they could be sort of described as a mix between some of the quieter CW moments mixed with Bacteria Cult's abstract tendencies. Makes sense I guess. No official release plans yet.

Morbid Angel - Formulas Fatal To the Flesh LP. Finally some well deserved wax for this underrated classick. Morbid Angel discography on vinyl that much closer to being complete! Does anyone know if Entangled in Chaos was ever released on vinyl?

Peste Noire - Folkfuck Folie LP. My favorite French Black Metal Hooligans!

Immortal - Pure Holocaust LP. One of my favorite Black Metal albums ever, and the only good album in my opinion by these fucking goons.

Nyogthaeblisz - Apocryphal Progenitors Of Mankind's Tribulation LP. Good to see this get some respectable packaging. So I sold the originals to some suckers on ebay, and bought this one. No razor blades in this edition though. Bummer. The noisecore of the Black Metal world, these dudes make your average raw black metal bands sound like Opeth. So fucked it almost borders on being avant-garde.

Smell & Quim - The Christmas Album + A Sod's As Good As A Wank To A Blind Arse CDs. I was just gonna say the entire Industrial Recollections catalog, but that label started in 2009, so I can't. For those who don't know, IR is a label specializing in reissuing CD versions of ancient Noise and Industrial cassettes from yesteryear. Which is like my favorite shit EVER. Check out the Macronympha or Contagious Orgasm ones if you need proof. I wonder if this label takes requests? Because I could provide 'em with a nice list if need be. Anyways, these did come out this year and I'm stoked because I can't get enough of these English weirdos. They make some of my favorite noise/whatever ever. their early stuff is super creepy but their later stuff is weird and funny. But I love all of it. Blood, Piss, and Shit. Kill it, Fuck it, Then Kill it!

Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream LP. The GOD of Swedish Death Metal albums!! So stoked to get this one on vinyl. Extra bonus points for providing bonus tracks of Carnage (aka Dismember before they were Dismember, featuring Mike Amott from Carcass!) outtakes. EXTRA bonus points for the vinyl sized artwork of Dan Seagrave's masterpiece of an album cover. YES!

Ultra - Roman Holiday LP + 7inch. Another one of my favorite experimental groups. Hard to describe this stuff, but it rules. A truly uncategorizable band, but without being one of those pretentious "look how many genres we can play" kinda bands. The piano parts were always super creepy to me. Maybe I'll just let their bio do the talking: "Experimental/noise US outfit Ultra creates deeply anxious collages of sound and voice in a mixture of fear and beauty. There are some places where they scream their faces off, but mostly it is the nature of the sounds themselves: hordes of insects, demonic sighs, electric buzzes, rumbles, creaking that gets under your skin and into your head, whether you want it to or not." aptly put.

Yep, guessing by the title up there, I am an Atheist. Big deal right?

Well, apparently it is a big deal to some uppity religious folks when they find out that I do in fact celebrate Christmas. Oh, how smug they get when they think they've "got me" by celebrating "their" holiday. "OOOOHHH IN YOUR FACE!!!!! YOU GET AND BUY PRESENTS FOR CHRISTMAS?!?!? BUT I THOUGHT YOU DIDN'T BELIEVE IN JESUS, EH? YOU'RE A HYPOCRITE!!" is how it usually goes. Sometimes A dumb little dance follows as well. uuggh.

But then I think, when was the last time you or anyone you know has done something religious for Christmas?

I do remember my Grandparents going to church on Christmas day when I was a little kid, but I think even they gave up on that.

Obviously this holiday started off as religious, but that was yyyyeeaaarrrsss ago! (more letters makes it a longer time ago) But as of modern times, it has strayed quite far from that.

We can obviously go into the crass, almost uncontrollable, consumerism that Christmas has become, but that's gotten so boring and the more I go on about it the more we all start turning into hippies. And we don't want that now do we?

FUCK NO.

So, lets run down the list of Xmas activities which most of us partake in shall we?

1. Decorating the outside of our homes with flashing multi-colored lights.

Nope, not religious.

2. Decorating a small pine tree with more flashing multi-colored lights, tinsel, and various ornaments of your own personal taste.

OK some of these ornaments can be religious, but it is not a requirement, so it doesn't count. Especially because I haven't seen a religious ornament in who knows how long. It's always shiny colored balls or Santas and reindeer and shit. Also, on top of the trees usually there is a star, and from what I gather it is supposed to represent the star of Bethlehem correct? OK, but have you seen an Xmas tree without a star or something on top? It looks like shit. So the star stays purely for aesthetic reasons.

3. Buy gifts for your friends, family, and loved ones to show your appreciation and love for them.

Nope, not religious.

4. Wrap said gifts in colorful paper, so they can enjoy the surprise of said gift upon receiving it.

Nope, not religious.

5. Get together on Christmas Day with said friends, family, and loved ones to exchange gifts which show your appreciation and love for them. Then share in a mighty feast where you (hopefully) enjoy the company and conversation of said friends, family and loved ones.

Did you say a prayer before you ate your dinner? No? Neither did I.

6. Hang up stockings filled with small gifts and treats, and leave presents under the tree for the little tykes to find when they get up in the morning. Presumably left by "Santa". (until they find their parents stash anyways)

OK, that's all I can think of. Anything else?

So with that said, I can proudly say "Yes I am an atheist, and yes I do celebrate Christmas."

I love my family, they are awesome! I love getting them gifts. And I love it when they get me gifts. I also love hanging out with them, eating dinner, and just spending time with them. And that is what Christmas is really about.

So in YOUR face religious types, we took your most treasured holiday away from you!

FANGORIA has learned of the passing of beloved French erotic-horror filmmaker Jean Rollin. The director died last night, after a long illness. He was 72.

Fans of European genre films, especially those coming out of the free-thinking 1970s, are no doubt aware of the work of Rollin—a talented, gentle poet of sensual horror, a man who made personal, lush and haunting works that were often ghettoized alongside the efforts of some of his more crass contemporaries and yet almost always offered something more, something richer and more melancholy.

“Jean was surrounded by his friends,” Rollin’s son Serge tells Fango, “and was looking at the photos of his two granddaughters when he died.”

With films like THE NUDE VAMPIRE, REQUIEM FOR A VAMPIRE, LIPS OF BLOOD, FASCINATION, THE LIVING DEAD GIRL and THE GRAPES OF DEATH, Rollin left behind a body of work as infatuated with spurting blood as it was enamored of the curves of the female form, often depicting both within the same frame. Like his colleague Jess Franco (with whom he unofficially “collaborated on VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD and ZOMBIE LAKE), Rollin employed a variety of pseudonyms, depending on the quality of his work and the genres they fell under. Some of those nom de plume pictures included several works of hardcore pornography, a strain of cinema the director was never fully comfortable making.

Loved by legions, misunderstood by many and sadly ignored by the rest, Rollin frequently appeared in the pages of FANGORIA. Our current issue, #299, features one of the final interviews he ever gave, conducted by our French correspondent Caroline Vié. His work is widely available on DVD and is ready to be rediscovered. The sad news has reached us that Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson has died in his sleep last night at the age of 55. Chris Carter twittered "Our dearest beautiful Sleazy left this mortal coil as he slept in peace last night. Words cannot express our grief." and the TG site simply displays the message "Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson 1955 - 2010".

Truely saddening news as Coil and Throbbing Gristle were MASSIVELY infuential to me and I'm sure countless other People as well.

Last week I made a rare appearance outside of my house and actually went to a show for a change. It was a pretty sick lineup and it was free!

Monarch! rolled in from France, plus Trees from PDx, and Lesbian from I forget where. I won't lie to you, I'm not usually into this sort of thing (with some exeptions of course). You know, the more droney end of the Doom Metal spectrum, the "hit a chord every two minutes" style. I really don't have the patience for it, after a few minutes I start getting anxious waiting for the blast part to kick in, but alas, it never does. But let me tell you these bands really hit the spot. Maybe it's a genre more appreciated live? Who knows, but this show ruled for sure. I tried to take some pictures, but they didn't really come out all that good. And (un?)fortunately for you I am going to show them to you anyways. So here we go, some terrible pictures of some awesome Doom Metal bands.

Their singer Emilie ran her vocals through like 40 different kinds of reverb pedals, it sounded fucking awesome.

OK, Lesbian aren't drone/doom metal at all really, they were more uptempo and kind of proggy. They fucking ripped and we're a perfect ending to this gig.

Oh, and speaking of random, while driving home my buddy, who was behind the wheel, looks over and says "hey, check out that bus". And sure as shit, it was Tim and Eric's (of Tim and Eric's Awesome Show Great Job! on Adult Swim) Tour bus!!! So we got up close to get some shots and these were the best I could do going close to 60 mph down the 5 freeway at 2am.

If you are remotely familiar with Circuit Wound's diverse make of noise as heard on the Perceptual Distortions, Density And Assimilation or Cherry Point/Circuit Wound split releases, prepare to be pleasantly confused. This is one of Jay Howard's most experimental releases to date. So different, in fact, he considered not even using the Circuit Wound title for this tape (although I convinced him otherwise). Rainbow Bridge is stoked to be putting out more weird shit these days and even more stoked that this particular weird shit was shit right out of Jay Howard's insides.

Full-color j-cards. Limited to 31. SO GET ON IT QUICK LIKE.

For A little while now, I have been wanting to do a "solo" project, as in, play under my own name rather than CW. Mainly to explore other types of sound, such as doing cut-up collage/musique concrete, field recordings, etc etc. And this was to be the first "Jay Howard" release, but Mr. Rainbow Bridge convinced me otherwise. No big deal. its still very "CW". The first side starts off with a crude tape loop of some wind chimes that slowly gets manipulated into spacey, rhythmic feedback ambience. The B-side begins with a fast paced cut-up junk noise and guitar mangling collage that also gets enveloped by some acoustic and feedback ambience. No real harsh stuff on this one.

Tis the Season (part 2)

Woooo!! Its Halloween again, and you know what that means? Time to go through another killer seasonal playlist! But unlike last time, I'm not gonna go list movies I am going to watch, as I'm probably just gonna watch the same flicks anyways (Although I am debating on doing a Subspecies vs. Puppet Master marathon instead). This time I am going to list my favorite Horror Soundtracks that have been oozing out of my stereo speakers this holiday season.

First up is the mighty PHANTASM. Yes, my copy is signed by star and all around awesome dude, Reggie Bannister. Yeah I know its not the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), but its still awesome. I met him at one of those Fangoria Horror Conventions a few years back. Anyways, Phantasm is one of my favorite movies, and probably one of the more weirder, surreal horror movies out there. It is perfectly complimented by its soundtrack by Fred Myrow & Malcom Seagrave. The haunting melody in my opinion rivals John Carpenter's Halloween theme, but is far less known. Bummer. Probably due to the previously mentioned weirdness.

Next, brought to us by the always strange, always classy, and always very very cheap, Dolor Del Estamago label. Aka Stomach Ache. The dudes over Dolor.... were cool enough to bootleg a bunch of dialog and fucked up sound effects from the classic among classics EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN. You know this one right? You fucking better. Whats even cooler is that instead of just going through the movie from beginning to end, they shuffle it up so the timeline is all screwy to keep us who pretty much have the flick memorized on our toes.

yay! more bootlegs!! I love 'em! Here we have 3 cassettes by the unfortunately short lived Dutch Oven Classic Horror Soundtracks label. I have a pretty good idea who was behind this label, but I'm not gonna spill the beans.

Starting on the left we have of course THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Sound by William Bell & Director Tobe Hooper. Another no brainer that shouldn't need explaining. Dutch Oven was cool enough to take the entire movie and dub it straight on to a 90 minute cassette! That's right, the ENTIRE MOVIE, word for word. Even the creepy John Laroquette intro. The only thing more fucked up than watching the movie is LISTENING TO IT.

In the middle we have EATEN ALIVE, another Bell/Hooper collab. It's not as notorious as TEXAS, but still rules. Pretty simple one here. CHEW CHEW CHEW CHEW. The end, ha! Well, there is more to it than that, but you get the idea.

And finally on the end we have CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, by Fabio Frizzi. Fabio's proggy synthesizer work makes up the soundtrack to Fulci's zombie classic. Frizzi's stuff was always awesome but will forever live in the shadow of the mighty Goblin.

And speak of the Devils! Was super stoked to nab this one on wax recently, here is Goblin's Soundtrack to George Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD. The label did a great job on this reissue. Big gatefold layout, Lots of great screenshots, the works. No list of Horror Soundtracks is complete without at least one entry from the legendary Goblin.

In last years Halloween post, I raved about this unknown classic. DUNWICH HORROR, staring Sandra Dee and Dean Stockwell. Another one I was lucky enough to find (for surprisingly cheap no less) on wax. Stoked they used that cover too! I love the painting of that monster. Lex Baxter's orchestrated score is great. A little "Big band"ish for my usual tastes but it fits with the movie quite well. I kind of want to do a cover of the main theme. We'll see.

The final bootleg we have today is brought to us by the mysterious Saxon-gregory label, and here is a sick slab of wax containing music and sound effects from one of the weirdest zombie movies ever, BURIAL GROUND. What makes it so weird? I'm not telling. Go watch it, its worth it I swear. The music is so great, lots of fantastic theremin action and spacey synthesizer work mixed with gross zombie sounds that are like... perfect. Yes, it even contains the audio from the infamous "Mommy...." Scene. Horray!!

I was debating on including this just because of how obvious it would be, but fuck it. Found this for extra cheap at this used record/book store out in Glendale when I was still living out there. THE OMEN is better than The Exorcist in my opinion, and the main theme, "Ave Satani" is one of the most iconic horror themes ever. Im super into the Fantomas cover of this as well of thier Director's Cut album. Good Shit.

And finally here we have it, same ending as last year. SUSPIRIA. The king of em all. Sorry for the lack of cover, but my copy of the soundtrack came with my 3-disc "badass" edition of the movie. Goblin's second entry in my list is of course my favorite. I listen to this pretty regularly around here. I'll let them speak for themselves....

OK, I'm in the middle of writing a pretty big article for Halloween, much similar to the very nerdy one I did last year.

But before I do that, I'm just gonna wet yer whistle here with a couple of Horror related things of interest.

First up, I was sittin' around watching AMC's FearFest horrorthon this past week, and they were doing a Friday the 13th marathon. Awesome. Missed the first couple so I ended up randomly on part 5. Its an OK flick and everything, but what I remember the most is the random "punk/new wave" girl Violet and her hilarious death scene. For some reason, I think this might rival the infamous "Garbage Day" from Silent Night Deadly Night 2.

EDIT: pause it at 0:51. Is that a Banjo case??!?! Anyways.....

Is it just me, or does all that robot dancing go on for like... days. It's hypnotic really. When I was looking around for that death scene, I came across an article written by someone about the various behind the scenes and "stuff that never made it to the film" type of things. They said the original way this scene was intended was that Jason was gonna come in and stab her right in her crotch! But the cencors shot that one down so they had to reshoot the scene with her gettin' it in the gut. For some reason they thought a teenage girl getting stabbed in the vag with a machete might have been a little harsh I guess.

Next up is a pretty neat interview with Chris Barnes from Six Feet Under, but more importantly the first 4 Cannibal Corpse records (Corpsegrinder blows). Yeah, after the first album, SFU took a pretty heavy dive (I think Barnes started smoking to much weed personally), but you cant ignore this dudes influence on Death Metal vocals and lyrics. Here he discusses his early horror experiences and how they influenced him. Extra bonus points for the fact that he is being interviewed by my good friend Kelli!! whoa!!

Due to the good will of monorail trespassing label head and one of my favorite noise artists, Jon Borges, as to combat inflated collector type prices, has decided to reissue almost the entire early monorail trespassing catalog of limited cassettes. Or as he says it himself:

"permanently reissued, hopefully with more to come in the future; these are now available on the page as well, priced economically . . . no more collector inflation."

Included in those cassettes is the very first official Circuit Wound release, "Disruption in Modern Progress" c30 from 2001. This is pretty old material and sounds very different from what I am doing today, but I am definitely still proud it. It is very raw, one take junk noise and monotonous grinding loops.

Finally, here we have another installment of the ongoing series of JL America outsider weirdo Death Metal CD uploads. This time from Puerto Rico's Organic Infest.

Man, where do I even start with this one? This could possibly be the world's filthiest, ugliest Death Metal album ever. How on earth did they even get that guitar "tone"? Back in high school this was regarded as a total joke, the benchmark for awful Death Metal. Like when we heard some shit band we would say "But at least it's not as bad as Organic Infest!". But over the years it has kind of grown on me, I don't know why. I guess maybe I've grown to respect how unique and strange it is. Under further, more careful listening, I've noticed that there is actually some semblance of intricate musical ability underneath the lo-fi caveman metal with some occasional complex time signatures, techy backround basslines, and scary church organs that kind of remind me of "The World is so good...." era Mystifier.

So that got me thinking, what are these guys really up too? Can it be that these dudes are actually secret prog-metal wizards doing some deep conceptual interpretation of "Death Metal"? Another clue is, look at that artwork!! What a freakin mess of freaky psychedelic mushroom visions. That's way too colorful for your average Death Metal record, that's for sure.

So whats the verdict? Latin American Death Metal Mongoloids? Or Secret Unholy Prog-Metal Warriors from Beyond the Grave? Only one way to find out

Diabolical Full Moon Mystcism

Recently, as of a few months ago, I resurrected a tradition I started back in High School that me and my friends did for a short time, and that is going hiking at night while the moon is full. Because the moon is so bright, you don't really need flashlights, which makes it pretty interesting.

Last Saturday night was a pretty epic full moon, weather was great, but unfortunately only one other person confirmed, my buddy Brandon, who've I mentioned before in the cave adventure. His lady Haley couldn't make it this time though. So the meager lineup for this adventure was just me, him, and Caroline. Well, until BranDRONE pulled up and with him a solid crew of Chris, who also plays in Fields, and another good buddy Micheal. Wasn't expecting that. Stoked.

Once night falls we hit the road. Our chosen destination for this evening, Rocky Peak. A local hiking trail that wraps itself for about 8 miles or so around the north and east ends of my fair city. Parts of it are also known as Chumash trail, after the native Indians that used to live here. Obviously we're not going to be doing the entire thing this night, but we'll play it by ear and see how far we get.

Before I really begin though, I just want to warn you that there aren't going to be alot of pictures in this entry, as well, we were in out the hills in the middle of the night so obviously the camera wasn't going to be working to great effect.

Allright, we begin our trudge up the mighty mountain. Its pretty fuckin' steep, so some occasional breaks are needed. No big deal, we carry on and about 45 mins to an hour later we reach our destination, A killer outcropping of rocks that I have hung out on before that overlooks both Simi Valley and the San Fernando Valley. Great spot, and some well earned chillin takes place.

As I survey our surroundings, I tell the crew how familiar it all looks and there is something mysterious about the field behind us. Then I remember sometime when I was a kid, I heard about a small plane crash that hit one of the nearby peaks and crashed into that field, killing everyone aboard.

Just then as the conversation dies, a silence falls, and off in the distance a strange wind-type sound is heard. It's a deep, kind of guttural drone, almost humanish, but definitely not. Still with a very wind-like "woosh" type sound that remains constant for minutes at a time. it's pretty creepy and we begin theories on what it is. Best guess was maybe the freeway/city noise is bouncing off some of the hills and eventually making its way to us, producing that sound. Until I get a peek over at Brandon, who is sitting on the far opposite side of the me and I cannot see normally because everyone else is in the way, and he and Caroline are holding their empty water bottles up in the air, letting the wind catch the openings. Just like when you blow on a jug. They immediately burst out laughing. haha allright guys, good one, ya got us.

Here is where the story gets really interesting. Now, being miles back in the hills, in the middle of the night, the dudes thought this was an fine time to spark up a bowl. Normally I would partake, as I tend to do on occasion, but I don't like to smoke while I hike, as the exercise just makes it wear off for me anyways. So its a total waste.

So we chill for little while longer before deciding to call it a night at around 11:30 pm and start to head back down the mountain.

But on our way back down, off in the slight distance, we see a very bright light heading its way up the trail. At first we think, "other hikers?", but no, its much too bright. "Its a truck!!" I yell, "Hide!". Fortunately there was a good size boulder off to our right, so we all run and climb behind it. Chris says to me "dude, should I hide my stash?", "Yes" I answer, as he shoves his hand down into a crevice. Slowly crawling around the rock as the park ranger truck goes by, we make sure to always be on its opposite side of it as we successfully evade them.

As we emerge out from behind the rock and back out on the trail, we look up at the truck ascending up the mountain. But then one of the dudes yells "It's turning around!" and Brandon, Michael, and Chris book down the trail. At this point, we are at least a mile from the bottom, so this is no easy run they have ahead of them.

But I look back and its actually not turning around, it just of went around a curve or something so I yell down to the guys that it is safe, but they don't hear me I guess and they disappear off in the darkness.

So slowly Caroline and myself walk down the rest of the trail by our lonesomes.

Eventually we meet up the guys about maybe a half a mile before the bottom, where from this height we can see the parking lot where a police car is waiting, lights blaring.

Right before the last turn that leads to the parking lot, we gather around each other and try to decide what to do.

Caroline wanders off some side trail, looking for an alternate route, but to no avail. We seem pretty screwed at this point. Brandon and Chris have even already threw thier stash and pipes off into the bushes someplace.

With that revelation I say fuck it, lets just go down there and walk out like normal. Now that there isn't anything illegal on us, the worst they can do is get pissed we were there after hours. No biggie. But as we turn the corner to walk down the final small hill, hooray! the cop is gone! We are in the clear.

We breath a sigh of relief as we get to the bottom and turn the corner to the parking lot. But to our horror, there is the cop car, sitting right there. We got nothing else to do except say "fuck it" and walk by casually.

As we pass by the cop car I can't help but glance behind and look, and I notice that it's empty! There isn't anyone even in the damn thing! What the hell?

What I guess is, that sometimes the cops around here will leave empty cars sitting in high traffic zones, as like a speeding deterrent or something, like if someone sees the car they will slow down, not knowing its empty, and that's what they were doing here.

whew!

Where my van is parked is actually not in the parking lot, but on the adjacent street, slightly around a corner, as not to give away the fact that we are up there. But just as we are about to get to my van, bam! the ranger truck emerges out of the hills and I quickly jump in the van. Once the rest of the guys get here though they start freaking out saying "he's got us, he flipped on the lights and he is just sitting there waiting for us!"

a small discussion ensues as what to do, if I drive off they are gonna nab us, but if they wanted to get us, why wouldn't they just drive over to us themselves? Then Brandon notices that there is 5 of us, but only 4 seats, so they could easily get us on a seat belt ticket, which is stupidly expensive here in California. So Brandon and Caroline decide they are going to get out and walk, and if they get me, I'll just deal with it for however long it takes, then pick them up wherever they happen to be afterwards.

So off they walk.

A minute or so goes by then I start 'er up and turn around to head home but nervously awaiting the inevitable talk with the police. But as I go by, its gone! whew again! We pull up to Brandon and Caroline and tell them the coast is clear, but they don't believe us and want a double check. OK, back we go, doing a quick loop around and its all clear. They get in the car and we head home victorious.

Hassle free, but also weed free. But Chris has assured me he only brought a small amount with him so its nothing.

Wow, that was a doosey, can't wait for next months hike! Can you?

Mysterious Mountains Hidden Beneath Antarctic Ice Revealed

The first detailed pictures of one of the planet's last unexplored frontiers - a vast mountain range that rivals the Alps in majesty buried underneath the ice of Antarctica - were revealed by scientists this week.

The rugged peaks soar to more than 8,000 feet (2,400 meters). They are buried beneath solid ice more than a mile (1.6 kilometers) thick, deep within Antarctica's eastern interior.

The existence of this mountain range, called the Gamburtsev Mountains, shocked the Russian scientists who first discovered it more than 50 years ago, and mystery still shrouds the nearly 750-mile- (1,200-km-) long series of subglacial peaks.

At the International Polar Yearconference in Oslo, Norway, scientists unveiled new radar images of an area of the mountains the size of the state of New York.

"What we'd shown before was an estimate based on gravity data - a little bit of a coarse resolution tool," said Robin Bell, a senior research scientist at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York. "What we showed at this meeting was the radar data. It's like going from using a big, fat sharpie to using a fine-tipped pencil."

What the pictures reveal, Bell said, is spectacular: a dramatic landscape of rocky summits, deep river valleys, and liquid, not frozen, lakes, all hidden beneath the ice.

Bell was among a team of scientists from seven countries who spent two frigid months collecting geophysical data in the remote antipodean wilderness via sophisticated, aircraft-mounted instruments in late 2008 and early 2009.

The expedition provided researchers with several terabytes of information - just one terabyte could hold two days worth of songs or one million pictures. Although it will take years to process all that data, Bell hopes the numbers will answer some of the questions surrounding the Gamburtsev Mountains. A big one is how they formed in the first place.

"We now know it's not a volcanic mountain range," said study team member Kathryn Rose, of the British Antarctic Survey. "And uplift by a hotspot in the mantle is probably out in terms of a mechanism of formation." (The mantle is the scorching hot, molten rock that underlies Earth's crust and is the source of volcanic magma.)

Rose said the data are also providing invaluable insight into the evolution of the colossal East Antarctica Ice Sheet - the 6 million square miles (15.5 million square km) of ice that conceals the Gamburtsev Mountains and is important to understand in terms of its potential to melt in a warming world.

"Scientists need to improve our understanding of ice sheets and their dynamics because it impacts sea level everywhere," Bell told OurAmazingPlanet, emphasizing that new insights are guaranteed for years to come.

"We're still scratching our heads as to how the mountains were made and why they're still there," she said. "But I think we have the data we need to solve the puzzle."

But these are better than anything Immortal has done by a landslide. Why? because they did it with out using any corpsepaint (aka cheating) whatsoever!

There is a pretty great back story on how I discovered this band too.

Me and a buddy were working at this used record store back in the late 90s (early 00's?) and this was sitting there in the used CD bin. Just by looking at these band photos, we HAD to hear what kind of strange Death Metal came out of these weirdos. So we pick it up and chuck this fucker in my cars stereo on the way home.

We sit back in silence as the opener "The Only One Astral Being" (as seen in the video above) plays out. As it ends, we just burst out in laughter. But not making fun of it, we are both just dumbfounded on how fucking awesome it is. Total shocker. I think it is one of the only times I can think of that I have been disappointed that something was good. But I soon got over that and came to appreciate some fucking kick ass Death Metal when I hear it.

Sorry, as some of you may know I usually like to offer some great obscure Death Metal for download here, but this album is still in print. So go pick up "The Kinglike Celebration" by Mexico's finest, Shub Niggurath. Only bummer is, all the other albums by them aren't very good. Oh well.

Oh, and the French S.N. are pretty ripping too as you heard above, so pick up their album "Les Morts Vont Vite". It rules. I couldn't find a YouTube vid from that album though, sorry. Your just gonna have to take my word for it.

Manhattanhenge

What will future civilizations think of Manhattan Island when they dig it up and find a carefully laid out network of streets and avenues? Surely the grid would be presumed to have astronomical significance, just as we have found for the pre-historic circle of large vertical rocks known as Stonehenge, in the Salisbury Plain of England. For Stonehenge, the special day is the summer solstice, when the Sun rose in perfect alignment with several of the stones, signaling the change of season.

For Manhattan, a place where evening matters more than morning, that special day comes on Sunday, May 30th this year, one of only two occasions when the Sun sets in exact alignment with the Manhattan grid, fully illuminating every single cross-street for the last fifteen minutes of daylight. The other day is Monday, July 12th. These two days give you a photogenic view with half the Sun above and half the Sun below the horizon—on the grid. The day after May 30th (Monday, May 31), and the day before July 12 (Sunday, July 11) will also give you Manhattanhenge moments, but instead you will see the entire ball of the Sun on the horizon—on the grid. My personal preference is the half-Sun

As you may know, had Manhattan's grid been perfectly aligned with the geographic north-south line, then the days of Manhattanhenge would be the spring and autumn equinoxes, the only two days on the calendar when the Sun rises due-east and sets due-west. But Manhattan's street grid is rotated 30 degrees east from geographic north, shifting the days of alignment elsewhere into the calendar.

Note that any city crossed by a rectangular grid can identify days where the setting Sun aligns with their streets. But a closer look at such cities around the world shows them to be less than ideal for this purpose. Beyond the grid you need a clear view to the horizon, as we have over New Jersey. And tall buildings that line the streets create a kind of brick and steel channel to frame the setting Sun, creating a striking photographic opportunity.

True, some municipalities have streets named after the Sun, like Sunrise Highway on Long Island and the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. But these roads are not perfectly straight. And the few times a year when the Sun aligns with one of their stretches of road, all you get is stalled traffic solar glare temporarily blinds drivers.

So Manhattanhenge may just be a unique urban phenomenon in the world, if not the universe.

Note that a couple of years ago, an article in the New York Times identified this annual event as the “Manhattan Solstice.” But of course, the word “solstice” translates from the Latin solstitium, meaning “stopped sun,” in reference to the winter and summer solstices where the Sun's daily arc across the sky reaches its extreme southerly and northerly limits. Manhattanhenge comes about because the Sun's arc has not yet reached these limits, and is on route to them, as we catch a brief glimpse of the setting Sun along the canyons of our narrow streets.

Our Universe

Awhile back when I made a post about some of the recent books I have acquired, one of those books was Aliens in Space.

Recently, when looking at Aliens in Space, I was reminded of an old book my Father had that I used to look at alot when I was a wee lad that was themed around some "What if.." possibilities of what an alien creature would look like if it had adapted to living on the various planets in our Solar System. I don't remember much else about the book except for one painting of Jupiter's resident alien, some balloon type creature that evolved to float around in Jupiter's gaseous atmosphere since Jupiter does not have surface.

So I hit up pops with that pretty vague description and he doesn't have the slightest idea, but says I am more than welcome to poke around his book collection and see if anything looks familiar.

OK, that doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but my Dad has a pretty insane book collection. So much so, that one of the rooms in the house has actually been converted into an actual library, which is floor to ceiling books, covering every wall except where his desk is. And not only that, he recently converted the living room into a secondary library with the books also going floor to ceiling, but the ceiling out there goes to 14 feet! So needless to say this was gonna be a pretty intense book hunt. Especially considering I don't even know the damn title.

oh yeah, this doesn't have anything to do with this, but I just want to mention this because it's awesome. My Dad is also a skilled woodworker so he designed the library so it kind of looks like an old medieval wizard's chamber. Here is the doorway.

Yep, all wood, with 2 hand carved open books towards the top, a Mayan Calender in the middle, and yes, the door handle is a deer antler. Awesome. One of these days I'll take some pictures of the inside and post it here. Anyways, back to my book hunt....

So I look for maybe 45 minutes to an hour in both the main library and the newer living room one, and so far coming up with nothing that even remotely looks familiar. But my Dad mentions that over Memorial Day weekend he is going to be re-organizing the whole thing and he will keep a look out and if I want I could even help out. Which I happily agree too, as that actually seems like fun to me.

Feeling defeated, but still not wanting to give up, I hop on my computer and bust some google action. But again, still a pretty hard thing to do seeing how I don't know the title. I even try the the author of Aliens in Space because some of the art was similar and I thought maybe I would get lucky and find it that way, but nope nothing.

Until finally I try "Jupiter alien illustration" and success! I find someone posted a picture or two from exactly what was in my memory on some message board. Apparently it is from a book called National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe. So I bring the title up to my Dad and we go on the hunt again, and within 5 minutes we find it!

Ah, I was so excited, until I started flipping through it and couldn't find a damn thing. Just normal old Astronomy stuff. But wait, success again, as I find what I'm looking for about halfway in. Ha! The alien part is only 2 pages long! Hilarious I would remember this and focus on something this small in like a near 300 page book. Shows where my head is at right? Aliens, always aliens.

So without further adieu, I present the "What if.." section of National Geographic Picture Atlas of Our Universe. Complete with narration liner notes about each creature.

What if...

...there really were creatures on other planets? Scientists now suspect that in our Solar System only Earth cradles life. We cannot yet rule out Mars, but so far our spacecraft have not yet detected anything obviously alive. Some experts still hope to find life elsewhere - perhaps under the ice of Jupiter's moon Europa, or even floating in the atmosphere of a gas-giant planet - but chances are slim. Yet we can still try to imagine how life might adapt to the environments of other worlds. Just for fun, let's go on an imaginary safari to real places faithfully described, and see some creatures that never were.

Titan On dim, cold Titan, Saturn's giant moon, stovebellies might live - perhaps by the icy shores of a methane sea. To avoid freezing, they keep fires burning inside their bodies. How? Stovebellies eat ice, which forms much of Titan's surface. Their fuel is made of oxygen from the ice and methane from the dense atmosphere. By squirting flame like a rocket, they can make long leaps in Titan's low gravity. Amphibious fishimanders like to crawl out of the sea and cuddle by a handy stovebelly for warmth - until their host blasts off, sending its guests flying.

Mars Whisper-thin winds hiss along a dry, dusty canyon. Deadly ultraviolet radiation pours from an unshielded Sun. Nighttime cold reaches -80 C. Perfect weather for a fellow like the Martian waterseeker. it's parasol tail can lift three meters in Mars' low gravity, shading it from ultraviolet sunburn. The long snout can probe for pockets of ice under dried-up channels. And the giant ears, needed to hear well in the thin air, also serve as blankets: In Mars' frigid nights the waterseeker stays snug by clamping its ears tightly around its whole body.

Europa Flat ice covers the second of Jupiter's four major satellites. Europa may be the smoothest globe in the Solar System, And here brinker-roos might frolic, on feet shaped like skates. They lead a carefree life, living on pure energy as they zoom across the endless frozen plains. Since there's no air to breath and no food to eat, brinker-roos need no mouth's or noses. Their green skins can carry out photosynthesis in sunlight, as plants do. And the coils on their backs pick up energy from Jupiter's strong magnetic field, which Europa must travel through as it orbits the giant planet.

Pluto Electrical, crystal beings like these Plutonian zistles would find -250 C too hot for comfort. At night, when it's colder still and electricity flows perfectly, zistles feel best. Highly intelligent, they spend most of their free time radioing great thoughts to each other. When Zistles do get going, they can spring 20 meters high in Pluto's feeble gravity. Zistles think Pluto is the only planet with life - it's too hot everywhere else!

Venus To survive Venus's heat - lead would melt here - you might need a body that feeds on rock and metal. This oucher-poucher snacks on a space probe from Earth. Venus' surface is so hot that oucher-pouchers keep shifting from one foot to the other. They travel by inflating their pouchlike bodies and bouncing along the ground. Every time one lands, it utters its customary cry, which sounds remarkably like "ouch".

Jupiter From birth to death, any life in Jupiter's wild atmosphere would have to stay airborne - there's no place to stand. Hanging from their gasbags, floating jellyblimps would be easy prey for hungry swordtails. A swordtail uses Jupiter's strong gravity and its own pointed body to dive right through its victim. All creatures here must avoid winds blowing toward the freezing layers above or scorching pressures below.

And there you have it. That picture above is what was in my head that was the only thing I had to go on. Man, and it is so good, I think I might take it to a printer and have a small poster made.

By the way, whats up with this dude and giving all these animals "fart" propulsion? Seems odd to me is all that most of these things mode of transportation invovles something shooting out of its ass.

So after I stared at these for awhile, I decided to look up in the glossary who the artist was, as maybe they had some other killer stuff out there to check out. And boy does he. For the artist is none other than Michael R. Whelan, the second best Death metal artist ever! Right behind the mighty Dan Seagrave of course. Mr. Whelan's art can also be seen adorning the album cover's of Sepultura's Arise, Beneath the Remains and Chaos A.D., in addition to Obituary's Cause of Death. Shit man, it was meant to be!!

Oh, and Evan would stab me if I didn't mention that Mr. Whelan's complete art for Cause of Death (as that was only a fraction used on the COD cover) was also featured on book covers for a series of stories by the great H.P Lovecraft. Awesome.

Late one night, I was doing some good ol' YouTubin', and for the life of me I don't remember what anymore because I accidentally stumbled across this. A Documentary on early Electronic Music Composers who worked for the BBC in 50s and 60s.

I'll tell you what, after seeing this, I will never complain about the tedium of programing drums and working up rhythm sequences again. The way these geniuses did it is awe inspiring. So these are about 10 mins each so if you have some spare time set aside, I HIGHLY recommend viewing these if you are at all interested in Electronic Music.

It's funny when they talk about how Synthesizers are too high tech for their type of electronic music.

Oh, and Delia Derbyshire was a babe. R.I.P.
